| Claire Gandy has absolutely nothing except a love for film that qualifies her to write anything worth reading, and that she is unbelievably honest and will give anything a chance. A huge supporter of the local film and arts industry, and has a genuine passion for it, being at several times, in front, behind and next to the camera too. She likes Pina Colada’s and long walks in the rain. We can’t back that up. |

I have fond childhood memories of the Jeff Bridges filled TRON film, in which a computer hacker is accidentally turned into a piece of software and sucked into a malicious program. So I was quite excited when I heard of a sequel, albeit some 28 years on from the first instalment, but first glimpses are very impressive and recently the director, Joseph Kosinski, sat down and spoke to MTV about the project. When questioned on the nature of Jeff Bridges return to the franchise he says “Jeff is playing two characters. He’s playing Kevin Flynn…and he’s playing Clu, the AVATAR that Flynn created in the 80’s”. I love this idea and look forward to seeing it flesh out on screen. When talking about the 3D elements in the film he goes onto say “Our approach is not like AVATAR, which I think is 3D from the first shot to the last. Ours is sort of a ‘Wizard of Oz’ approach. 98% of the 3D is in the world of ‘TRON’. The 3D really starts once we get into the TRON world”. I kind of like this mix up, the black and white to Colour transformation in Wizard of Oz fascinated me as a child and had quite a profound impact cinematically, even more so when I found out the transition shot had half the set painted black and whit including costumes to allow it to work! The inherent problem that I’ve always seen with this project is how, after such a period of time, they will deal with the story elements. I’d hoped that they wouldn’t necessarily re-tell a similar story; rather build on the foundation laid in the first. In discussing this point, Kosinski says “The focus was to serve the story we are telling… Kevin Flynn…eventually released the TRON video game based on his experiences from the first film, Encom became the most innovative digital company in the world… things have gotten bigger and a bit out of control”. One word, PUMPED. I’m very much counting down until its December 26 release, in the interim, I’ll have to settle for the first film and the xbox live arcade game…… |
