Ever wondered what goes on inside Eddie Murphy? Me neither, but Meet Dave asks us to believe Eddie's body houses a spaceship and its crew of aliens. And that Eddie, who loves multiple character roles, doubles up as the ship's captain. This is the set-up for what I'm sure is intended to be a series of hilarious sequences. Such as: When Dave takes his first-ever sip of water, a torrent of water drenches the crew. When Dave tries on some clothing, an innocent shirt becomes a cotton beast which nearly smothers him. When he goes in for a medical check-up, the metallic Dave must battle the magnetic forces from an MRI. And a banquet of processed meat tubes which he learns Earthlings call “hot dogs” leads to an explosive situation inside a men’s room. Sounds a real hoot, no? Maybe, although sci-fi comedy is a notoriously difficult genre; for every Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Ghostbusters there have been duds like Evolution and The Adventures of Pluto Nash which starred, um, Eddie. Maybe Elizabeth Banks will bring some humanity to the film as Gina, a fiery artist and single mother whose son bonds with Dave. How does Eddie see his characters and the movie? I have no idea: I haven't found a single interview he's given. |
