| Twilight: a dangerous romance |

How cool is Twilight, the movie based on Stephenie Meyer's young adult bestselling novel, going to be? Super-cool, judging by the imaginative approach of director Catherine Hardwicke, who made the provocative teen film Thirteen. "It made me feel again that giddy, dizzy feeling of a teenager falling in love, when you will do anything," she said when she first read the novel. Rejecting a script that had been developed for MTV Films, the director worked with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (whose credits include Step Up and the serial killer TV series Dexter) to capture the obsessive romance between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and hunky Edward (Robert Pattinson). The twist: Edward is a vampire who has renounced the age-old habit of feeding off human blood. Like a recovering alcoholic, he struggles to keep himself under control, and Bella risks her life to be near him. "He has to hold back," Hardwicke tells Variety. "That's the sexual tension, the thing that keeps people reading. Is he going to turn her into a vampire?" She auditioned potential leads by getting them to perform a love scene on her bed at home until she found the right chemistry between Kristen (who was terrific as a hippie in Into the Wild) and Brit Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). The director hired Jackie Chan's stunt master to mastermind swooping wirework for the vampires, and in one scene, Edward flies through the Oregon rain forest with Bella on his back. And there's a Harry Potter-style vampire league baseball game in a thunderstorm. Some fans of the book aren't sure whether pasty-faced Robert is right for the role: what do you think? Twilight opens in January. |
