Well here we are at the end of 2008 and I thought it’d be good idea to let you know the top 5 grossing films of the year. It’d be no surprise to realise that The Dark Knight took out top spot with $45.7 million, completely smashing any other movie this year. It’s amazing to think that this beat 2nd spot by an astonishing $14.3 million! Mamma Mia came in second with $31.4 million followed by the latest in the Indy franchise with $29.3 million. 1.The Dark Knight – It’s rare that a film exceeds all expectations, particularly when they are HUGE, and this film did exactly that. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button grabbed the top spot at the Australian box office over the weekend taking an expected $3.2 Million from Thursday to Sunday. Brad Pitt plays a man who is born 80 years old, but instead of aging, he grows young. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett costars, along with Taraji P. Henson and Tilda Swinton. The annual boxing day box office battle is not far away with Adam Sandler's 'Bedtime Stories', Keanu Reeve's 'The Day The Earth Stood Still', Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button' plus Frost Nixon and Vicky Cristina Barcelona all tussling for the trophy. Hello Twilighters, Well I wasn’t far off with my opening week guess of $8 Mill, it came in just shy. So far it’s sitting pretty on $10.7 mill. Robert Mulligan dies

Director Robert Mulligan has passed away of heart disease, aged 83. Mulligan was nominated for an Oscar for "To Kill A Mockingbird," the adaptation of Harper Lee's best-selling novel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning look at a child's world shaken by the racism of a Southern town. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa grabbed top spot at the Australian box office over the weekend taking an estimated $3.8 million. Rolling along nicely in second spot was Twilight which took $2.4 million with plenty of the Twilighters out there going for a second viewing. Australia retains top spot at the box office

It's either been critically slammed or acclaimed but Australia keeps huffing and puffing at the Australian box office, maintaining its stranglehold on the number one spot and taking an estimated $4.1 million in the process. Disney's High School Musical 3: Senior Year grabbed second spot with $3.9 million. Not much changes at the U.S box office

Not much changed over the weekend at the U.S box office with Four Christmases (re-titled Four Holidays here in Australia) holding onto the top spot with an estimated $18.1 million. Twilight continues to power along and jumped back into second spot in a direct swap with Bolt. Twilight has been a mega success story, now with an overall estimated total of $138.5 million. 2008 AFI Awards re-cap

The 2008 AFI Awards were handed out on Saturday night in Melbourne with the late Heath Ledger picking up the Best International actor award for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Cate Blanchett won the Best International actress gong for her role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. The Black Balloon was the most nominated film and collected six awards, including the best film gong. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg is sure the next big change in the movie industry is going to be 3D. After going from silent to sound and then from black and white to colour, he strongly believes 3D will be the next revolution in Tinseltown. After watching Bolt 3D, he does have a point but will cinema goers want to see EVERY film released in 3D? Katzenberg firmly believes so. The crazy animal adventure continues

They're back!!! Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria return as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is released in cinemas December 11 (QLD/NT/SA) or December 19 (NSW/WA/VIC/ACT). If you've heard much about Four Holidays, there was word there may have been tension between stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn. I'm a huge fan of Jim Carrey, he's a very funny guy and the hilarious faces and maniac characters he has the ability to get himself into, make him one of my favourites when it comes to comedy. I have just seen 4 scenes from the new JJ Abrams Star Trek film. WOW. Fans will not be disappointed. Can I say it has (so far) everything you come to expect, action, humour, a kick ass crew, the freakin’ Enterprise and Leonard Nimoy! I mean, c’mon. The effects look out standing. We've been given a sneak peak at Star Trek this morning and it looks sensational. Director J.J. Abrams has done a great job and the film which is released on May 7, 2009 looks set to introduce a whole new legion of fans as well as tease the curiousity of the die-hard Trekkies. Australia leads the way at box office

Australia has debuted at number one at the Australian box office taking an estimated $6.3 million over the weekend. Quantum Of Solace slipped to second place with $4.2 million but with an impressive $18.7 million overall. Rob Schneider's latest offering Big Stan landed in third spot with Quarantine and Sex Drive rounding out the top five.
